THE LINCOLNSHIRE HANDICAP

Contested on Lincoln Racecourse since 1853, apart from a brief spell during the First World War when it was transferred to Lingfield Park in 1916 and then cancelled for two years, the Lincoln Handicap has launched the Flat racing season for over a century and a half. This site provides a comprehensive history of the most famous of early season Handicaps; every winner, runner, owner, trainer and jockey. Results have been gathered in meticulous style by Anthony Lake who deserves considerable praise for locating even the most obscure pieces of information. During the Second World War, from 1942-45, the race was run at Pontefract, being known as the 'Northern Lincoln' in 1942, and the 'Substitute Lincoln' from 1943 to 1945. In 1964 Lincoln Racecourse staged its most famous race for the final time before the track closed and the race transferred permanently to Doncaster. In 2006 the race was held at Redcar, and in 2007 it was run at Newcastle.
